Three Puffs

My father smoked a pipe for many years. He worked in the woods thinning forests to encourage growth of higher quality trees when the weight of the chain saw was twenty pounds or more.

I would watch as he packed the pipe and knew how long he expected it would take to sharpen the chain…how long we had to talk. Conversations lasted as long as the smoke from the pipe… usually… three puffs.
