A young midwife. A murdered man.

Elizabeth Bowmar is caught in a dangerous web of suspicion, and with every passing hour the noose draws closer.

In the perilous alleys of 1618 London, apprentice midwife Elizabeth Bowmar stands accused of murder. Balancing on the edge of freedom and ruin, she battles suspicion and deceit. Pursued by a relentless enemy, Elizabeth must uncover the dark truths hidden in the black fog.

Will Elizabeth clear her name before the city’s secrets consume her?

Description

Amid the fog-drenched cobblestone streets of 1618 London, Elizabeth Bowmar is caught in a dangerous web of suspicion. When a man is found murdered shortly after a public altercation with Elizabeth, she becomes the prime suspect. Evidence linking her to the crime threatens not only her freedom, but endangers her dream of becoming a licensed midwife.

Elizabeth finds herself in a perilous race against time. As suspicions mount and the threat of arrest looms over her, she must unravel the truth behind the murder. Her quest is further complicated by Peter-the-son Chamberlen, whose relentless pursuit and hidden motives weave a tangled path through her search for justice. As she dodges his advances and uncovers layers of deceit, Elizabeth’s faith and resilience are tested.

With Peter’s father holding evidence that could destroy Elizabeth’s future, every moment counts in her bid to prove her innocence. While the city’s dark alleys hold tight to their secrets, Elizabeth’s determination pierces the black fog, driving her toward the truth.

Set in the harsher realities of 1618 London, Black Fog includes references to murder and social injustice. These elements are depicted with honesty and emotional depth, but the focus remains on Elizabeth’s faith, courage, and commitment to justice—not on graphic or sensationalized violence.

Black Fog introduces the On The Wings Of Angels series, a historical tale of mystery entwined with threads of divine purpose. Discover a world where sinful shadows challenge true kindness, and follow a young woman’s journey of faith.

Why the Phoenix?

Elizabeth embroiders a small phoenix inside her kirtles—a hidden reminder that she can rise again after hard seasons. In *Black Fog*, this little emblem is already with her, a private promise that God can bring new life out of dark days, even when she can’t yet see how.

"I know it is all God's plan. I don't have to understand it. I just need to try to live through it."

Inspiration

Black Fog, the prequel to the On The Wings Of Angels series, is rooted in both real history and enduring human values. In the early 1600s, London began shifting from wood to coal as its primary fuel. When the coal smoke mingled with the natural fog rising from the Thames, it created a thick, choking “black fog” that could turn familiar streets into a disorienting maze. That mysterious, often dangerous atmosphere became the backdrop for Elizabeth Bowmar’s story.

Against this very real historical setting, I wanted to explore how small acts of kindness and steadfast faith might look when visibility—physical and moral—is limited. On the perilous streets of 1618 London, Elizabeth and those around her struggle to protect innocent lives and seek justice, even when the path forward is obscured. Step by step, their choices inch them closer to becoming the people God intended them to be.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
